Forage Fish Spawning Sites

Posted on November 28, 2017

Forage fish, such as surf smelt and sand lance, are important food sources for marine mammals, birds and fish, including salmon. Human activity on the shoreline can impact the spawning success on the beaches, and as a result the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife can restrict activities in known spawning locations for forage fish. The web site reached through the link below includes a map that documents known spawning sites for those fish as well as Pacific herring, giving you some insight into whether a specific property might be subject to regulation for forage fish protection.

The site also includes materials to enable individuals to carry out forage fish spawning beach surveys.
